College isn’t just about getting a classroom education. It’s also about expanding your horizons in other ways. Eat new food! Meet new people! Go new places! Do all three at the same time by grabbing a car, some friends, and hitting the open road. The summer is the perfect time to jump in and go for an adventure. Try these five road trip destination ideas:
1. The ocean
Head for open water! Once you get to the nearest beach, all the gas and miles spent getting there will be worth it. Our favorite drive: California State Route 1, also known as Highway 1. Drive through Big Sur, California. Enjoy the view.
Located in Memphis, Tennessee, the mansion of Elvis Presley is one of the most storied road trip destinations of all time. Why not see what the buzz is about?
3. Plymouth Rock
Plymouth Rock is one of the most ridiculously disappointing landmarks of all time. It’s remembered as the landing place of the pilgrims — America’s founders — but really, the rock is, well, just that: a small rock, making it a hilariously awful road trip destination, and ironically one of the best. (Think of it this way: the journey is the important part, not the destination.)
4. The Big Apple
Despite the high cost and nearly impossible task of finding a parking spot, New York is still one of the best places in America to road trip. Why? The Empire State Building. The Statue of Liberty. China Town! Little Italy! Broadway! Times Square! Central Park! The list goes on.
5. The Big Easy
Filled with great music, fantastic food, awesome weather, and a deep, significant history, New Orleans is a must-see for any fan of the open road.
