When applying for a job make sure your resume — your golden ticket to an awesome summer job — is as close to perfect as possible. Start by avoiding the following mistakes, which top our list of things employers hate to see on a resume:
1. Is not tailored to the job description
It’s important to pull what you can from your past work or volunteer experience to best demonstrate you are the right candidate for the specific job or internship you’re applying for. Don’t just write one resume and send it everywhere.
2. Includes irrelevant personal information
Every piece of information included on your resume should have a purpose. It’s okay to include experiences not directly related to the position you’re applying for, but you should be able to explain how each experience will make you a better employee.
3. Is longer than a page
Keeping your job titles and descriptions as short as possible while still conveying the importance of each experience is a challenging but essential part of writing a good resume. Brevity is the key to success. Remember that!
4. Is poorly formatted
Make sure everything lines up correctly, font sizes and styles are consistent, and margins are not any smaller than ½ an inch. You want your resume to be clean and organized. That way a potential employer can spend less time navigating your resume and more time reading about who you are and what you offer.
5. Has grammatical mistakes and spelling errors
This one is a no brainer: proofread, proofread, and proofread some more. Ask friends and family to help out, as they might catch errors you’re missing.
