Dorm room essentials: a checklist

Your dorm room is a sanctuary. It’s where you sleep, eat, study, and play. That’s why it’s so important that your dorm is stocked with the stuff you need to survive college:

1. Alarm clock

You probably already have a phone, but that’s no excuse not to have an alarm clock. Phones run out of batteries. Plus, what if you accidentally leave your phone on silent?

2. Microwave

Obviously! The microwave has been King of the Kitchen ever since its invention. You can use it to make quesadillas, scrambled eggs, ramen—and way more! It’s fast, easy, and cheap eating.

3. Posters

Decorating your dorm is a good way to make your sanctuary feel more personalized and more comfortable, which could improve your sleep and your studying.

4. Desk lamp

Because dorm lighting is never good. It’s always too bright or too dim. Plus, you may want to read while your roommate is sleeping.

5. Laundry basket

Because your clothes don’t belong on the floor. And you need to carry it to the washing machine.

6. Bedding

Even if your dorm comes with sheets, blankets, and pillows, do you really want to use them? But make sure you check your bed size before buying anything! Not all dorm beds are standard twin.

7. Coffee machine

Drip coffee machines are cheap and easy to use. Better yet, they save you the hassle (and cost!) of going to a coffee shop every morning. That saved money adds up fast!

8. Mini fridge

Who doesn’t want a supply of fresh food in their room? Better yet, a small refrigerator allows you to keep leftovers—whether from the dining hall or an evening out on the town.

9. Shower caddy

Keep your toiletries organized in a waterproof shower bag. It makes it way easier to carry your shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, face wash—and everything else—to the bathroom all at once. Better yet, it’s an easy storage solution: just hang the bag in your closet when not in use.

10. Noise-canceling headphones

Dorms aren’t known for being quiet, so better come prepared.
