5 New Year’s resolutions you can actually keep

A journalist named Eric Zorn once said, “Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self assessment and repentance that demands personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle.” But we think 2014 should be the Year of Resolutions People Actually Keep. The trick is making small changes and sticking with them. Here are five of the best:

1. Eat more vegetables

You don’t have to change your whole diet all at once to get healthy. Start small by adding more vegetables into your daily routine. A little broccoli in your pasta and green peppers in your eggs. Easy!

2. Skip all elevators and escalators

Take the stairs instead, which weren’t put there for decoration. It’s an easy way to insert a little more exercise into your busy life without having to change your schedule or get to the gym.

3. Spend more of your leisure time outside

After a hard day at school or work, people all too often fall prey to the routine of eating dinner, watching TV, playing video games, or surfing the internet. Getting outside a bit more — taking a walk with friends, for example — is a good way to stay social, have fun, and get active. Science says all three improve your mood and your health.

4. Sleep a little more

The truth is more sleep is good for your mind and your body. Not only will you be in a better mood, you’ll actually live a little longer. If you’re tired a lot, try implementing a sleep schedule: just go to bed 30 minutes before you used to.

5. Pay down your student loans faster

If you haven’t already signed up for SmarterBucks, now’s the time. Earn rewards that automatically become extra student loan payments. Signing up is free, earning rewards is easy, and you could shave years off your repayment.
