Fans of Game of Thrones will recognize the motto of House Stark: winter is coming. But first, fall! The best season. Milder weather, beautiful colors, and loads of cheap ways to enjoy your time. Here are five of our favorites:
1. Carve a pumpkin
Nothing screams fall like carving pumpkins. Hit up your local grocery store, farmer’s market, food co-op, or even farm. Pick out the fattest pumpkin you can find. Then get to work on your masterful carving creation! Check out Reader’s Digest for some cool pumpkin carving ideas and even print free stencils to make it easier.
2. Pick apples
Picking apples in the fall is practically a rite of passage. All you need is a few friends and a nearby orchard. When you’re done picking, the real fun begins. What are you going to do with all those apples? You can make applesauce. Or maybe you prefer apple cider. Or apple pie. Or baked cinnamon apple chips. Or candy apples. The list is almost endless!
3. Get lost in a corn maze
Doing a maze on a piece of paper or the back of a cereal box is a fun distraction. But getting lost in a real maze, in real life is an otherworldly experience. Corn mazes abound across the country, so there’s sure to be one nearby. If you’re not faint of heart, try a haunted corn maze or go at night with nothing to protect you but a flashlight.
4. Go on a hayride
After the corn maze, you may want a little time to relax. Hop on a hayride! Get pulled around by a tractor! Enjoy the smells, sights, and sounds of fall. Bring a blanket, have a coffee, and cozy up with your friends. You could even turn it into a romantic date for you and that guy or gal you’ve been too shy to ask out…
5. Enjoy the leaves
Fall is nature’s way of painting. Green trees turn vibrant colors. Red, orange, yellow, brown. Go hiking, nap in the park, or just walk around town. Go anywhere that trees abound. Spend a few hours just looking up. After you’re done enjoying the view, rake the leaves, make a pile, and dive in!
