In most cases, preparing for an interview by reciting answers to common questions is good enough. In some cases, however, an interviewer might decide to throw a curve-ball and ask you an odd question. Although these questions are difficult to answer, they’re also an opportunity to set yourself apart from other candidates. Here are four questions that were actually asked during interviews followed by our advice on how to answer them:
How to Answer: This question is aimed at testing a candidate’s ability to solve complex problems and take advantage of limited resources. Most people don’t know that scissors are a great substitute for a pizza cutter, so you might suggest cutting slices into smaller pieces for children! Check it out here.
How to Answer: Don’t just say one that you like. Think of the qualities you value in animals that you feel are similar to your own. For example, you might answer a lion because you are courageous and have survival instincts that allow you to succeed no matter the circumstances. Answers like this will show your interviewer that you are able to take a seemingly mundane question and find deeper meaning.
How to Answer: This question is a great way to describe yourself and highlight your strengths. A hunter might be more of a go-getter who focuses on a single task no matter how large it might be. A gatherer might be better at multitasking and capable of finding opportunities that most people might not be able to identify.
How to Answer: Zappos is known for its eccentric company culture. This question is testing your sense of humor and capacity for fun. Zappos is most likely asking this to find out if you would fit in within their fun-loving office. Your best bet on this one is to think of something creative and unique and explain it with enthusiasm. If your idea is presented with excitement, it shows that you care about exciting company events and overall culture.
Keep in mind that there really are no wrong answers to these questions. The interviewer just wants to see how you react to unconventional situations. If you find a way to make your answer unique and personal, you’ll impress your interviewer and increase your chances of getting hired.
